I start with curly maple blanks and machine them on my CNC router using a program I wrote specifically for cutting out the winder cranks.
I sand or buff each string winder by hand at least five times before it is a finished product.
I look for handles that make a nice contrast to the curly maple cranks. They require lots of sanding too!
I try to keep enough inventory of the different crank types and the different handle woods so that I can assemble, wax, package, and mail within two days.
I have been known to take some vacations, so if I am out of town I will do my best to email you an estimated date of shipping.
I like using PayPal. I also think it is a good deal for you since it offers buyer protection.
I try to keep up with the Post Office rates for first class postage and only charge you what I am charged. If you order two winders the postage rate is the same as for a single.
Thickness (T)
Width (W)
Depth (D)
A string winder that is larger than your tuner will probably work but will have a sloppy fit. A string winder with a thickness or width smaller that your tuner, will not work! Check your size with a caliper if you are unsure.
Thickness = 0.29"
Width = 0.58"
Depth = 0.5"
These string winders are designed to turn without hitting the outside D and A string tuners.
Thickness = 0.32"
Width = 0.62"
Depth = 0.5"
Like the standard F-style string winder, these are designed to turn without hitting the outside D and A string tuners.
Thickness = 0.32"
Width = 0.62"
Depth = 0.5"
A styles have a shorter crank since the tuners are aligned in a row. They fit the same tuner dimensions as the F-Style for large tuner buttons.
Thickness = 0.26"
Width = 0.79"
Depth = 0.5"
These string winders fit the smaller tuner buttons found on guitars like my Martin Custom 15 or the Collings D1-A in the photo.
Thickness = 0.33"
Width = 0.79"
Depth = 0.6"
These string winders fit the larger tuners.
Thickness = 0.29"
Width = 0.93"
Depth = 0.5"
When the Butterbean is too small and the Grover is too big
Thickness = 0.29"
Width = 0.58"
Depth = 0.5"
Thickness = 0.32"
Width = 0.62"
Depth = 0.5"
Thickness = 0.26"
Width = 0.79"
Depth = 0.5"
Thickness = 0.33"
Width = 0.79"
Depth = 0.6"
Over the years, I have made special sized winders for banjos, dobros, basses, and lots of other stringed instruments. I can do this by making some changes to my CNC milling machine program. Once I have the dimensions, I can cut the string winder to the size that your instrument needs.
To order a custom string winder I need an email from you with the Thickness, Width, and Depth of your tuner button and any other important information to ensure that the winder will fit properly. This is also a chance for you to ask for a handle wood not on my standard list. I will respond to your email, and when we have an agreement of what is needed, you can place an order.
Since I need to create the CNC program and machine the string winder as a special, it will usually take a couple weeks for me to finish and ship to you.
